The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge Community Gallery, located at 427 Laurel Street in downtown Baton Rouge, will host the International "Birth of Coffee" Exhibition. Based on the book of the same name by Daniel and Linda Lorenzetti (ISBN: 978-0609606780), the photography exhibit chronicles the life of coffee from seed to cup.
Daniel and Linda Lorenzetti travelled over a quarter of a million miles to five different continents in a span of five years to trace the birth and life of the 2nd most globally traded commodity (second only to oil). The duo-toned silver gelatin photographs specially processed with actual coffee celebrate the distant landscapes, cultural vitality and individual labor that infuse the coffee trade.
The exhibition seeks to bring the contributions of coffee farmers around the world into public view to facilitate a better appreciation of the world-wide morning brew. In the Birth of Coffee, Daniel Lorenzetti and Linda Rice Lorenzetti explore coffee’s profound impact on people in coffee-growing nations. Come and learn about typical early 19th century French Creole cultural customs surrounding death and mourning. Visitors will learn about the customs and decorative elements associated with mourning as practiced by the early 19th Century French Creole inhabitants of Louisiana. Visitors will learn interesting facts and superstitions surrounding mourning customs-such as why clocks were stopped at the hour of a loved ones passing or why all the mirrors in the deceased’s house were covered with black crepe. Attention Visitors: This exhibit deals directly with death and mourning customs. Though the exhibit and interpreted tour are presented in a tasteful manner, some of the information may be distressing to younger audiences. The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine will dedicate Connections
The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine will dedicate Connections, a bronze statue to honor the people who support animals in need, which is epitomized by the rescue, shelter, and reunification of animals in the aftermath of hurricanes. This sculpture will be dedicated on Thursday, November 6 at 3:00 p.m. in the School of Veterinary Medicine’s Serenity Garden near the entrance to the Small Animal Clinic.
Connections depicts a young girl offering water to a thirsty cat and dog representing both the relationship and responsibility we all share with domestic animals. “This sculpture illustrates the importance of animals in our lives, which was seen time and time again after the hurricanes as people refused to evacuate without their pets,” said Dean Peter F. Haynes. “This sculpture is dedicated to all of those people who braved high waters and dangerous situations to rescue animals and to the thousands of people who supported and cared for those animals after they were taken from harm’s way. It stands as a memorial to their grace, perseverance and dedication.”
This one-of-a-kind artwork, designed by Kentucky sculptor Meg White, is a central part of the Milton J. Womack Serenity Garden. Donated by the Womack family and dedicated in memory of the late Milton J. Womack, Sr., the Serenity Garden is located near the Small Animal Clinic entrance of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Landscaped by LSU landscape architecture graduate students, it provides a peaceful spot for reflection.
Participating in the dedication ceremony will be Chancellor Mark Martin, President Emeritus William Jenkins, Dean Peter Haynes and Ms. Margaret Womack. All hurricane volunteers and the public are invited to attend.
The 35th annual Broadmoor High Arts & Crafts Festival

Tuesday, October 14: Visit BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo, 3601 Thomas Rd., for a “Zoo and Me Morning.” The theme of the program will be “Night Owls.” This program is designed for children ages 3 to 6 accompanied by a parent or guardian. The program will be held from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. and will incorporate many exciting activities including a train ride, animal encounters, art projects, "zooper" snacks and many other hands-on projects that you and your child can enjoy together. Tuesday, October 14: BREC’s Magnolia Mound Plantation, 2161 Nicholson Dr., presents an Open-Hearth Cooking Demonstration, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. The Magnolia Mound Plantation kitchen has been reconstructed at its original location on the property. It is set apart from the main house because it was not customary to have the kitchen in or attached to the home. Costumed docents demonstrate open-hearth cooking techniques. Demonstrations are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday every week from October through May. However, demonstrations may be cancelled for various reasons so please call in advance to confirm demonstrations are available The demonstration is included in your walking or house tour fee. BREC's Bluebonnet Swamp will host "Swamp Haunted Hike"
Friday, October 17: BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp, 10503 N. Oak Hills Pkwy., will host “Swamp Haunted Hike” which is designed especially for younger children. This program is an alternative to the commercial haunted houses, which are geared more for teenagers and adults. Participants learn about snakes, insects, rats, and other “creepy critters” as they stop at educational stations along the trail. No scare tactics are used during this program, and participants are welcome to come in costume if they choose. All participants should bring a flashlight, and because this program runs at night, all children must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is not required.
